Tara Leigh Photography Blog bio picture

behind the curtain...

i am originally from seattle, washington, and have always channeled my creative energy through writing and dance. i was an english literature major in college, and a few years ago decided to move to new york to explore a career in book publishing. the book nerd in me has never been happier.  now i'm back on the west coast, and looking forward to channeling all this new life energy into taking beautiful photographs, and making people feel amazing about themselves.

photography, for me, became a passion that i never expected. several years ago i agreed to model for a photographer friend and spent what should have been two hours of trying to get fabric to billow behind me as i perched precariously on the edge of a high stool, asking a million questions. it was painfully obvious to both of us (i'm sure), that i had more interest in what was going on behind the camera, than i was with keeping my feather laden eyes open. i mean really, there's a fan blowing in your face, and you're supposed to be able to lift twelve pounds of feathers with just your upper eyelid?!

shortly thereafter i purchased my first camera and took every opportunity i could to practice shooting on my friends. there is something that i absolutely adore about being able to capture the essence of someone, and saving it forever. highlighting that certain something, and letting it shine. i think that's part of the reason why i am so hands on when i work with a client.

i am a student of behavior... of joy and sorrow and interaction. i believe in living a life worthy of memories and storytelling. there is nothing so beautiful as a genuine smile, and nothing so powerful as a tender embrace. i so look forward to working with you, and creating the kind of images that epitomize beauty... and ultimately... you.

mariah gale | faux bridal | new york wedding photographer

i bought a wedding dress. just because. and not because i wanted to torture myself by having a size 4 wedding dress that will never fit me, but because one needs a wedding dress to play dress up with. you know… just in case. and so, my lovely friend and fellow photographer mariah came down to visit from boston, and agreed to run around outside with balloons and feathers (and multitudes of tourists on the brooklyn bridge)… and even in the atlantic ocean. thank you so much to mariah… for a truly wonderful day!!

giuseppe de luca | in character | new york headshot photographer

it went like this: meet in the meatpacking district, client grabs an espresso, walk down to cobbles, take pictures in freezing cold, take more pictures in freezing cold, head up to the highline and try to take more pictures, get caught in a windstorm, client grabs another espresso, grab hot chocolate at a local diner, take more pictures in the freezing cold. find an indoor space that has a wall to wall heater and sit on it for several minutes before carrying on with the day. et voila, some awesome headshots of a true italian.

meet giuseppe.

and since i love a good crack-up…

i get asked sometimes what type of photography i enjoy the most… and my answer is always photographing people. but headshots especially are a truly amazing experience, because you are participating in someone else pursuing their dream. it doesn’t get much better than that!

thanks g for such a fantastic morning!

February 23, 2010 - 3:06 pm Cass - You have the best job EVER. Seriously. Cold and all :)

March 2, 2010 - 4:02 pm elizabeth pellette - awesome.. so real..

crazy weather headshot troopers | in character | new york headshot photographer

there’s dedication, and there’s dedication. and every winter, i get a few emails from slightly insane individuals that want to have headshots taken, regardless of the freezing temperatures outside. so here’s a shout out, to this year’s winter crew thus far… joel, mina, colin, and katie. a million thank yous… for the spiked coffee, hot chocolate and donuts, and playtime with cute kitties.

carol + mike | in love | seattle wedding photographer

this last new year’s eve, i had the extreme pleasure of photographing the wedding of carol and mike. i’d like to say wedding, but really it felt more like a grand ole party… full of great food, top hats and tiaras, and a whole lot of joyful dancing (and of course karaoke). the intimate event with family and close friends was held in the garden atrium at the fairmont hotel, and was truly beautiful! enjoy!
